Optimistic Moments

Old Jaffa

Jaffa can be described as the old city of Tel-Aviv, the part of the city that existed before all the blocks of flats and towers arrived. We were running a little late as the bus took a while to arrive but we made it just in time for the free tour. If you're going away somewhere, check out sandeman new europe free tours. They operate on a tip basis so the better the tour guide -> the happier the tourist -> the more money you're likely to tip = win win situation (unless you're a recent graduate). Also yes I know Israel isn't in Europe...

Moving on, we made the tour led by a very enthusiastic American dude who seemed to know what felt like everything about Jaffa. What I found the most interesting fact was that Jaffa as a whole town has been built up and knocked down 14 times by different civilizations which is why it's on a hill. It's not naturally hilly, the current buildings have been built on top of 14 demolished towns under the surface. If you start digging, who knows what time period you'll come up with!

After our fantastic tour we were hungry. And what do you eat in Israel? It has to be falafel of course. We stumbled across our first falafel bar of the trip. Delicious hummous! How I've missed good hummous. Why don't you exist in the UK?

Oh and another fun fact - this time more related to the photo. Jaffa port is the oldest port in the world which is still functioning.

And yet another fact, this one not relating to the photo. Ever heard of Jaffa Oranges? You've guessed it, they originate from here.
