This is one of four spatulate-billed species in the genus Anas, a group that contains nearly 50 species of dabbling ducks (e.g. mallards, teal, pintails, wigeons). The male is distinct from the female in his dark green head and starkly patterned body. At the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary.
