The Last Bite of Summer

Labor Day. The cultural -- if not the astronomical -- end of summer here in the States. This is the final bite of the final hotdog of the summer at "The Hot Dog Stand" (Jaenicke's) in Kankakee, IL USA.

My wife, Phyllis, and I were both born and raised in Kankakee -- and now live about 30 miles away. A few times each summer we make sure to get down to the old home town for the express purpose of enjoying the hot dogs we grew up with at Jaenicke's drive-in.

Jaenicke's closes after Labor Day each year, and so beginning tomorrow there will be no more red hots until summer rolls around again.

This is a photo of the end of summer. A moment later and it was gone. Time to take the screens off the windows and get the sweaters out of the back of the closet. I can almost hear the autumn wind rising.
