Lesser Redpoll Y730699

This bird was one of three that were always in or around the weeds on Holyman's Road - the route from the main Harbour to the Bird Observatory.
The etymology is obvious when you realise poll can mean the top of the head.
The systematics however are not so clear ad there are currently thought to be anywhere between one and five species of Redpoll in the Western Palearctic, with three being the current thought if memory serves me right. Interestingly their closest relatives are the Crossbills rather than Linnet and Twite which seems bizarre.
