Adventures in Fluorescence

Over the last week I have been trying to get flowers to take up some fluorescent dyes, but ironically they died before they dyed.

So instead, here's some a mixture of 2 solutions composed of fluorescein (bottom) and rhodamine (top). I used a UV lamp underneath a glass containing these liquids, to provide the illumination.

I am going to Birmingham tomorrow (train leaves at 6.20 a.m. - yuk!) for a conference about early career progression in academia. I hope it's useful. The return train fare was £165, which is crazy expensive to my mind. Hey ho!
