Shipwreck Coast

Day 3 at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore:

Did a hike out to Au Sable Lighthouse. On the way back we took a detour and walked Shipwreck Coast. A natural sandstone reef runs along the shore in the UP and has been the demise of many ships throughout the past couple centuries, hence its name, Shipwreck Coast. A few of those ships have since washed pieces ashore as you can see above. Some of this wreckage is from the Sitka, an iron ore carrying vessel. Rescue crews managed to save the cargo and the crew, but the ship was deemed a total loss.
