Both Classic & Grand

Up to Glasgow tonight to hear some good ole 'roots' tunes from Pokey LaFarge.

Got into the Classic Grand, a venue I've not been in before, to catch the support band, The Tillers, playing some bluegrass/country tunes. A tight three piece of double bass, guitar and banjo all huddled round a mic, harking back to the days of early tv where widescreen was sci-fi. A good half hour set from these guys and worth picking up a copy of the cd (which I will in the future)

A short interval later and on to the stage arrive Pokey LaFarge and his band of merry musicians, "good evening Glasgow, happy to be back" declared Mr LaFarge, about to burst into the first number only to be greeted with shouts of "haud oan" "stoap" naebody move,we have a piper down!

A bit of confusion ensued... an old fella had collapsed in the crowd, and thankfully made it back to his feet to be taken out and attended to. A round of applause requested by the maestro, and we were off.

An amazing hour and half of music from a band of excellent musicians, recreating an authentic sound from the banks of the Mississippi. Two guitars, a double bass, clarinet, trumpet a snare drum, harmonica and a washboard complete with cowbell and plates/saucers... just amazing sounds, harking back to the days "Big Bill Broonzy".

Despite battling against the "spawn of Satan" from the room downstairs (having a rock night), these guys rattled through close to 20 songs (maybe more). A great performer, interacting with the crowd between songs, the band are fantastic, never missing a beat. The songs cover old themes made refreshing by a classic genre, rooted deep in New Orleans Jazz.

A band well worth having in your record collection and even better live, I know I'll be back.
