No 157: Great White Egret

A great improvement in the weather today, and after a hearty breakfast, we made the short journey to RSPB Lakenheath Fen. Our hopes were high, but at first we saw very little apart from a kestrel and a marsh harrier. Then our luck changed and we spotted a number of egrets including this Great White. I managed a distant shot before it flew off along the river. Pete followed its flight with his binoculars and was confident about where in landed, so we walked back through the reserve. Just as we got to the spot, it took flight again but fortunately, it flew around above us several times before returning to its earlier location. We then got some nice views of a kingfisher, and the amazing spectacle of hundreds of crows and starlings coming in to roost. Of course I was hoping to get at least one more of my numbered bird blips on this trip, so to get one on the first full day is brilliant.
