Echo of Light

Folklore Tapes and the Strangest Thing

Tonight we went to Summerhall to see our friends Sam and Alison perform. It was a brilliant mix of projections, sounds, light and the atmosphere was amazing. Playing in the Demonstration Room at the old Dick Vet School, the room is circular with lecture style tiered seating which made the sound reverberate around the room. It was a bit disturbing to see a drain in the middle of the floor, it really was a 'demonstration room' or dissection space.

The projection on the left is a bird cage spinning on top of a gramophone, pieces of stuff attached to the cage hit parts of a xylophone type instrument as it spun. On the right a small spinning wheel turned and struck another instrument. All this with interspersed spoken sections of folklore tales. Plus hundreds of other projections. It made me want to get hold of an overhead projector, some cellophane, oil, some wool and play.

It's hard to describe, go see for yourself at Summerhall Friday night at 7!

I couldn't use my maybe new camera because the red sensor light was affecting the performance, so this is a photo from my phone!
