A Fragment

This is a small part of a massive mural called 'Midsummer Eve Pageant' by Mary Adshead. The mural was created in the 1950s. It is now proudly displayed at John Lewis in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol. After taking over the building previously occupied by Lewis's Ltd in the centre of Bristol, the John Lewis Partnership took ownership of the artwork. The mural moved with the branch when it relocated in 1998.

Mary Adshead, born in 1904, created many murals for public buildings. She died in 1995.

Midsummer Eve used to be celebrated by the Medieval Guilds of Bristol. A pageant was held in the city streets. There were games, dancing bears, wrestling and a torchlight procession and to top it all off....free ale was provided!
