The Messy Room

Now it's the odd-one-out round

1. Three varieties of Kent-grown apple; King David, Spartan, Adams's Pearmain.
2. Cobnuts.
3. Three bottles of Kent beer by Mad Cat Brewery, Canterbury Brewers, Old Dairy Brewery.
4. Crusty locally baked pain de campagne sourdough bread.

The apples were bought at Macknades in Faversham at their delicatessen-cum-farm shop. The almost black apple is a King David which is related to the Arkansas Black apple. The dark red one is Spartan and the paler, less round apple is Adams's Pearmain.

The cobnuts were bought from Faversham market this morning from a delightful lady who told me that many people, especially younger people, had never tried cobnuts. She also gave me a tip on storing them: remove the outer husk and store in the salad box in the fridge.

The beer is just a small sample of the many craft brewers in Kent. The middle bottle is a green-hopped ale and the Old Dairy Brewery Wild Hop contains hops which grow wild around their brewery.

Baked by me, the bread is a sourdough pain de campagne with white, wholewheat, spelt and rye flours. Lovely and crusty for breakfast this morning, the spelt giving it an earthier flavour. The bread wasn't bought, so it's the odd one out! <applause>

Yes, they're all locally produced but the bread wasn't bought. Thank you and goodnight. <end credits and theme tune>
