Odivelas Monastery

Founded in 1295 by King Denis, this feminine Cistercian monastery was built on an isolated spot of the Portuguese hinterland, around which the village of Odivelas developed. When King Denis died in 1325 and was buried in a Gothic tomb in the church of the monastery.
In the early 16th century there were several improvements made at the monastery, including the building of a new cloister in Manueline style and a Renaissance gallery by the entrance. In the early 18th century, the monastery was frequently visited by King John V, who had a scandalous affair with Mother Paula, abbess there.
King Denis is also said to have had a few affairs with young nuns of noble origin who lived there for reasons other than mystical vocation, like not having a dowry or not finding a suitable marriage. Not the best foundation for a religious life.
The start of the twentieth century saw it transformed in to a school for the daughters of the military. I rest my case...
Thus the monastery that was at the beginning of the city where I live, gained to this day quite a reputation.
