The Cock and Glass

Today we are so near to the Algerian border as to warrant an armed escort. Our objective was the the Roman garrison town of Haidra which was garrisoned as early as 30 BC by the Third Augustan Legion. Haidra later flourished as a civilian town, populated by Roman legionary veterans. Later, following the Vandal interregnum, the whole are was heavily re-fortified, by the Byzantine general Solomon, and survived on into the 9th century.

The Romans were mightily fond of Phallic symbols and here is one of them, together with a beautifully weathered shard of Roman glass. The Cock and Glass, now there's a good name for a British Pub!
