Cowdray Ruins

Walked into Midhurst via the fields and river bank. The Cowdray Ruins in Midhurst were looking splendid in the afternoon sunshine. Back in Victorian times, it was the fashion to visit romantic ruins and Cowdray was very popular, painted by Turner and other well known artists.

It was one of the great Tudor houses of England with royal visitors galore. It was restored and made safe for visitors in 2006, now open to the public and is the scene of various entertainments throughout the year. Note the tree on the left has lovely mistletoe, well out of reach of course.
