Under a Tuscan sunset

We left Gatwick in the sunshine and landed at Pisa in the sunshine, despite having seen nothing but cloud in between. The main difference is that it was 6 degrees in Gatwick and 22 degrees in Pisa!

The first thing we did when we got to our house was to try the newly pressed olive oil - "squisito" as the Italians say. We always come out this same week in mid-November and last year we helped our friends to pick the olives. This year they were picked 2 weeks earlier so that they were safely pressed before the bad weather that swept though last week. All the local restaurants will be serving Fettunta - literally "greased bread" - toasted country bread with a raw garlic clove scraped across it, liberally sprinkled with the new oil and a grinding of coarse sea salt - unless you've tried it, you wouldn't believe how delicious it is!
