Between fen and mountains

The drain

The Fens are very low lying but paradoxically quite unlikely to flood. This is because there are pumping stations that ensure that the water levels are controlled. The network of drains carry away millions of gallons of water a year. They require constant maintenance to ensure they do not silt up or become overgrown. Rats live in the drains and this is a reason for not bathing in them even on the hottest summer days. Some are wide and deep and driving on unsalted roads in winter can be hazardous. Many a car has skidded off the road to be submerged in the murky depths.
