Unveiling a Mosaic

For the past five years, members of my photo club (the PVPA) have been undertaking a program of photography instruction for students at the High School of Commerce in Springfield, a large town nearby in Massachusetts.

For the past two years, the students have undertaken a project to portray the school by assembling a large mosaic consisting of innumerable tiny portraits of the school community. This evening the finished mosaic was formally unveiled, after brief talks by some involved, and followed by a reception.

In this image the principal of the school is on the right near the mosaic (best seen large), with students in the photography program. On the left is the photographer Anne Savage, who was instrumental to completing the mosaic. She had become widely known through a mosaic of Barack Obama she created in 2008 before his election and which was published as a two-page spread in Time Magazine in December 2008. On the link you can zoom into the Obama mosaic and get a sense of what the Springfield mosaic is like.
