Edinburgh Bridge #13 Roseburn Terrace

Being a Friday and finishing work at 1pm and it wasn’t actually raining and the sun threatening to come out, I decided to walk across town to Tynecastle to get tickets for IainC and myself for the Celtic Cup game. There is a psychopath cycle path that runs from Trinity past my work at Crewe Toll round to Roseburn and from there it is not far to Tynecastle. Toward the end of the path it crosses the Glasgow Road at Roseburn Terrace on a disused Rail Bridge.
This bridge was part of the Granton branch of the Caledonian Railway running from a junction at Haymarket/Murrayfield down to the docks at Granton. It should be remembered that before the Forth Bridge opened in 1890 the quickest way of transportation of goods going northwards from Edinburgh was by sea. The line was opened in 1861 and was closed for rail traffic in 1962. For many years the unused railway was left to nature but in the ‘90’s it was opened to walkers and cyclists.
The centre panel of the bridge is the crest for the Caledonian Railway and is painted in the company’s colours of blue, green and gold although I think it could do with a touch up.
