Bremen: "Sky Room" in Haus Atlantis

Art Deco and decaffeinated coffee

"Himmelssaal" translates as Sky Room, equally as Heaven's Room.

Art Deco at its best. The Haus Atlantis is in Boettcherstrasse. "Boettcher" means cooper, someone who makes wooden barrels. The trade was carried out in this street, adjacent to Bremen's harbour, until the harbour changed location in the late 19th century.

Shortly after the end of World War I, most of the houses in the street were bought by Ludwig Roselius, the wealthy inventor of Kaffee HAG, decaffeinated coffee. The street was then transformed into an architectural showcase. The Atlantis House in Art Deco style is unmissable. Another building in the street was built (in expressionist style, no less) as a museum for the paintings of Paula Modersohn-Becker. And there is a Robinson Crusoe House; all will become clear if you read the first line of Defoe's novel.

This little street, only 100 metres long and a few meters wide, is a delight, whether or not you are interested in architecture. If you enjoy architecture or want to experience the creative genius of Paula M-B, Boettcherstrasse is THE ESSENTIAL SITE in Bremen to visit. (Anyway, the town musicians' statue is rubbish, honest.)
