Noorder Amstelkanaal

The front page of the neighbourhood newspaper had an article about a public art installation, so I spent the afternoon exploring the Apollolaan, where the sculpture is located. The Apollolaan, named after the Greek god, is a wide avenue with a lovely park median. The park is home to several interesting sculptures and monuments. Well maintained homes, apartment buildings and luxury hotels line the street, as well as several impressive law offices and financial firms.

The Amsterdam Hilton Hotel, the taller building on the left in the photo, backs this lovely section of the canal. The hotel, which opened in May 1962, is best known for John Lennon and Yoko Ono's honeymoon Bed-in for Peace in March 1969. A second bed-in was in Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Hotel in May 1969.
