Between fen and mountains

Oldest domestic machine

It always feels a privilege to work on something that really ought to be a museum piece. This clock mechanism is 283 years old and there is no reason it should not still be working in another 300. It was all built by hand using basic tools. The case it come out of is a beautiful slim longcase with mahogany and rosewood parquetry veneers, a flat top and finely engraved, silvered square dial. I collected it from a modest bungalow on the fen. Incidentally. in that time it has ticked 9,460,800,000 times.
