Bremen Town Hall: the upper council chamber

Impressive but visually cluttered

The town hall was built at the beginning of the 15th century. It is listed as an UNESCO world heritage site.

The upper council chamber is 40 metres long, 13 metres wide and 8 metres high, with large paintings on the back wall and four large model ships hanging from the ceiling. These models date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

Below ground is the Ratskeller, a large restaurant with up to 750,000 bottles of German wine in storage. Or if you fancy drinking tap water instead, it is a bargain at one euro fifty a litre.
