Friedensengel aka Angel of Peace

Apologies to the people who looked at my original blip; I though this may be a better one of Munich. It was taken on a Sunday morning before I checked out of my hotel.

It is of the Angel of Peace:

The Angel of Peace is to be found in the Munich suburb of Bogenhausen and it is part of the Maximilian Park on the banks of the river Isar.

There are two staircases leading to an observation deck , with a column which is 38 metres tall with a six-metre statue of the angel of peace; the Nike of Paeonius on its top.

This is a reminder of the 25 uears of peace following the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. The monument is home to the portraits of German Emperors William I, Frederick III, Wilhelm II, the Bavarian rulers Ludwig II, Otto and Luitpold, the Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and the generals Helmuth von Moltke, Albrecht von Roon, Ludwig von der Tann, Jakob von Hartmann and Siegmund von Pranckh.

The hall of the temple display golden mosaics which depict allegories of war, peace, victory and blessings.

The foundation stone for the monument was laid on 10 May 1896; the formal unveiling took place on 16 July 1899.

The Angel in fact fell from the column in 1981, it was reinstated to it's position on the top of the column in 1983.
