Sun worship

"Oh, that's a shame," she says, all sympathetic. "You took your photo with the sun in front of you. Pity it didn't work out. Still, never mind, eh?"

I bite my tongue.

I don't tell her this is just the very picture I wanted, with all its flooding light and glare and flare. To me, it's beautiful, wild, unpredictable.

And thinking back to the days before these neat little cameras with almost endless capacity, I think about how film made us so much more cautious and conventional.

You could never forget the costs, you see. The cost of film, chemicals, paper. You felt you couldn't be as free.

There's no way she'd understand.

So I just nod.
