JOHN HAMPDEN - pointing the way ...

This is the statue of John Hampden who stands in Aylesbury Market Square pointing the way to goodness knows where.

He was one of the five parliamentarians who attempted to arrest King Charles I in the House of Commons which then sparked the English Civil War. I am unsure why we have a statue of him in the town other than the fact that his family came from Great Hampden. He was killed at the Battle of Chalgrove Field in 1643 (ish)

Press L to read the inscription below his statue.

Interesting to note that the Earl of Buckinghamshire, who lives up the road from my Mum, is a direct descendant of his. If you want to know more about his life then click here

Its a lovely sunny morning
