Tolbooth stair

Having done stairways on the last two blips I decided to do another as I walked down The Royal Mile. Theses stairs are on the Canongate Tolbooth which was built over 400 years ago in 1591 and is now an interesting little museum called The People’s Story illustrating the social history of the ordinary people of Edinburgh. The Tolbooth has been used for various purposes including the collection of tolls from travellers, a municipal building, a court and a prison. In the past there must have been some unhappy people facing an uncertain future as they walked up or down those steps but today it’s mainly happy tourists who pose for photos at the stairway.
