From the Caribbean to rural Perthshire

An e-mail invitation dropped into my mailbox this morning to attend an acoustic art event in Kinbuck this afternoon.

Now for those not familiar with this area of Scotland Kinbuck is a tiny village in Perthshire with no church no shop, no post office, in fact no facilities except a village hall. So what on earth was an acoustic art event in Kinbuck? .... Intrigued I set off.

Well it was to launch Brina, a Jamaican trained musician and artist’s first ever solo art exhibition. And being Caribbean she recognised the importance of food and drink and getting people together to talk, share experiences and make music.

We had a most unusual afternoon with over 30 people at least crowded into the tiny village hall while Brina and Kieran, her Scot’s born husband, from the Isle of Mull entertained us.

They met in Jamaica where Kieran taught guitar and now they spend their time touring Europe doing gigs and are half based in Scotland and half in Jamaica.

“They appreciate world music more on the continent than they do in Britain, “says Kieran.

Well, this afternoon rural Perthshire got a rare taste of live world music.
