Fort Osage

Fort Osage was the second outpost built after the Louisiana Purchase. It's located on the Missouri River, about a half hour drive from present day Independence, MO and Kansas City.

Begun in 1809, it was used as part of a factory system. The US Government maintained an inventory of Indian trade goods from all over the world. Fort Osage was one of the few profitable ones. The locals complained and the fort was abandoned in 1828.
