HUNGER GAMES REDUX : Catching Fire

I loved the first installment of the 4 part series. But this one slugged along covering the same ground. The likable and pleasing-to-the-eye characters
kept me watching (2 hours and 26 minutes), but not riveted.

One year after winning the 74th Hunger Games, we have the “lovers” Peeta and Katniss embarking on a victory tour.

While traveling, Katniss becomes a symbol for rebellion in the poverty-stricken 12 outlying districts. Enter President Snow to put an end to this kind of idolatry. He plans a Quarter Quell to celebrate the games 75th year. This time all past winners will fight to the death. Sound familiar?

SOME THINGS I NOTICED.

PEETA (Josh Hutcherson)
I have trouble relating to his character. Maybe he’s accident prone, but he has more than his share of pain and suffering. Other characters, including his true love Katniss, must save him more than once in each movie.Talk about a major wuss. Here’s a hero that needs to man-up. I’m all for a strong female lead, but can’t the hero perform a few heroic acts? Must she have all the fun?

IRRESPONSIBLE WEALTH

During a massive party to celebrate the Quarter Quell Games, Peeta turns down a never-ending tray of appetizers. He can’t eat another bite. Not a problem. Party-goers offer a drink that, after a quick trip to the bathroom,
will give him room to eat some more.

MAJOR SCENE STEALER

Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci)- a flamboyant TV host. With over-the-top attire and a perpetually upbeat personality. He knows how to bring out the best in the tributes he interviews. Whipping the audience into a frenzy, challenging them to pick their favorites.

LIKE HER NAME

I see in Katniss Everdine (Jennifer Lawrence), feline characteristics. She’s careful with affection, but when you gain her trust, you’ll never lose it. She’s resourceful and certainly has her share of the 9 lives.

A TOUCHING SALUTE
Kiss the 3 middle fingers of your left hand. Then raise your hand in a salute. A moving sign sign of solidarity and respect. Careful where and when. Doesn’t go over well with President Snow.

ENDLESS SUPPLY

No matter how many arrows she pulls from her quiver, Katniss always has a fresh supply for the next assault.
