Dalkeith Palace Orangerie

Symmetrical dodecahedral conservatory with rich Jacobean detailing and flanking Roman Doric columns on a raised dais over heating chamber.

The Conservatory at Dalkeith Palace was built in 1832 to the design of Wiliam Burn and originally housed orange trees and dates, which gave it the name of Orangerie. It was conceived as the centerpiece of a parterre design, little trace of which now remains, by Wiliam S Gilpin who was of the “Picturesque Improvers school” applying the principles of painting to landscape gardening.

The disrepair arose in the 1950’s and currently the conservatory remains on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland.
