Falmer House

Returned to the University of Sussex to give a seminar there, first time I'd been back to talk shop properly since I left in 1997. I spent a very happy decade here, and I've only been back twice in the 16 years since I left.

This the west elevation of Basil Spence's award-winning (and now Grade 1 Listed) Falmer House, catching the evening rays. The cast concrete curves in the window arches are a repeating motif across most of Spence's buildings for the campus, an echo of the rolling downland the university is surrounded by. It's a really beautiful place to study and to work; I was lucky to spend so many good years here, and it was nice to be back.
