Aoraki/Mount Cook

Back Blip

This is a view from the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park DOC Visitor Centre. On the last day of my friends tour of the South Island.

We were lucky to see Aoraki/Mount Cook without cloud. It was a overcast day but mild and we took a walk along the Hooker Valley Track and Brenda and Lee went up on the Alpine Memorial to see the amazing views from up there. I had been up there before and because my leg was so sore, thought I better not try to climb up there today.

After the walk we went into the National Park DOC Visitor Centre where I took this shot looking out of the window at Aoraki / Mount Cook which is New Zealand's highest mountain at 3,754 metres (12,316 ft). Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is in the Canterbury region, which was established in 1953 and along with Westland National Park, Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park forms one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The park contains more than 140 peaks standing over 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) and 72 named glaciers, which cover 40 percent of the park's 700 square kilometres (170,000 acres).
