School closed at 1pm and after all the students had left, all the teachers went to Bizim Tepe* for a splendid afternoon lunch provided by the lovely ladies of the school's Parents Association who must have been up all night preparing such an array of delicious food - homemade Turkish cuisine - yummy! It is an annual occasion to celebrate Teachers' Day (24th November) and very much appreciated. As well as celebrating with current colleagues, it is also a time to meet ex-colleagues who join us if they can. One such friend retuned to us today from Singapore (but not just for this event!!). A nice tradition of this whole afternoon is that there is a celebratory cake which is cut by the oldest and the youngest teachers in the room. This year, the eldest (now 79) was in the Arts department when I joined the school in 1998 and the youngest is a new teacher who joined us three months ago, who was my student at this school and a graduate of 2006. Special.

This year this lunch also heralds the start of a four day weekend, as school is closed tomorrow and Friday for Thanksgiving.
