Found upsidedown

Our house was lived in by the stonemason of the nearby church in the 1860s and he's left some wonderful evidence of his craft. We have a slate floor with the biggest slabs of slate, perfectly rectangular with the tightest of gaps between them. The largest piece is in front of the main fireplace and measures a whopping 7ft x 2ft 9in. (He would have thought in imperial measurements after all). My archaeologist other half reckons they are very high status and much too high status for this cottage so perhaps it was his showroom!

Under the garden gate we unearthed another large piece of slate and found it was a partially completed gravestone! Presumably there was an error in the date, the name or something or maybe an apprentice was practising though that would be rather spooky because the name is a local name. We haven't looked in the graveyard ... have just thought of that!
