Keeping the Spirit Alive

Union organizer, newspaper editor and musical saw player, Tom Scribner was a common sight downtown in the 1970s, where he would make music for passersby. He was something of a counter culture celebrity, for he was a man of many talents: vaudevillian, humorist, philosopher, educator, logger, and a labor organizer with the Industrial Workers of the World. The bronze statue of him playing the saw was dedicated in 1978 and is a focal point on the main shopping street downtown.

I was delighted to see this young harpist carrying on the musical tradition under Tom's watchful eye.
