Brimble Clump

These small hills topped with trees, usually beech, are a typical feature of the local scenery. This one is called Brimble Clump. It looks down on the seat of the Duke of Somerset on one side, and on my farm (that used to belong to the Duke) on the other side. In the middle of the trees there is the tomb of Algernon, 15th Duke of Somerset, marked by a rough-hewn rock. Someone in the village has a fascinating photo from 1923 of six black horses with black feather plumes pulling a hearse with the coffin of the Duke across the fields to Brimble Clump. I can only assume that he wanted his spirit to be able to look down on his family home and surrounding parkland. There is a stained glass window memorial to him in our village church that I have previously blipped.
