'War, What Is It Good For?'

So this is the war memorial in my home town of Brentwood. I always consider taking a picture of it whenever I walk past but until now had never actually did it.
I don't know why, it's a perfectly photogenic monument after all.

I'm not, nor have I ever been, particularly close with anyone who actually fought in either world war so perhaps things like this are somewhat less poignant for me than for others, but still it leaves me a weird juxtaposition of mournful pride whenever I stop to consider all that this statue represents.
