'We are what we do.'

By Hasywell

This is not just a box...

This is a box of blood, sweat and tears. This is a box of resilience and perseverance. This is a box of achievement and success. This is a box of pride and self worth. This is a 'I can do it!' box. This is a box of smiles.

Why? This box caused one of my pupils to cry in complete and utter frustration because she just couldn't do it. She had reached that point where her reptilian brain shut down. This is not the first time for this pupil. In fact, each time this pupil meets something she cannot do she gets very upset and will end up in tears. So, how do you help her?

You share your own story of a meal out and a paper boat that caused similar frustration and angst. You explain that your own strategy was to eventually hide it, walk away and find something else to do or to look at. You tell her that finding something or someone to take your mind of it and make you smile again helps. You explain to her how laughter can lift the spirits. You explain she can try again once she feels she is in a better place. You assure her that you will sit with her and have a go with her. You tell her that you have complete confidence in her and that she can do it.

This is her handmade box. This is her 'can do' moment. You tell her to take it home and put it somewhere to remind herself of this moment. You explain that learning can be painful at times but not to give up just take some breathing space, a break, laugh and smile.

You hope that she will remember that box, that moment the next time she cannot do something.

22 years a go I was given an opportunity to realise my true vocation and passion and every moment I spend in the classroom, which isn't as much since becoming a head, reminds me of just how fortunate I am to absolutely love what I do whilst hopefully making a difference too.

Three beautiful things:
The tranquility of the early morning dog walk.
The smile on the pupil's face when she proudly showed me her finished 'box'.
This evening's dramatic sunset sky.

One thing to be grateful for:
My family are safe and well.
