Aftermath

We had a bit of a blow here the other night. Three casualties - two beech trees and this rather unusual exotic chestnut in the park.
It has always had a split down between its two trunks and so was vulnerable. Then the local former allowed his sheep to strip its bark almost to nothing, but still it hung on, regrowing enough bark to continue.
This storm however was the final event in its long life, as I was sad to discover this morning.
The dogs drew my attention to it, wondering what on earth it was, and when we went to look I was quite sad. It was a feature of our walks, and was planted to enhance the estate some 150 years ago. Nowadays, people don't seem to have the time, money or vision to create woods for the future, although we are trying to do our best in our garden. Anyone want some acorns?
