Greedy magpie with a big mouth

This is the old female magpie called scarface is one that we have been feeding in our back yard off and on for about 10 years. She has cleverly worked out that Paladian feeds Elvis and Priscilla on the front lawn. Today she not only joined in, she also tried to grab all of the mince on offer!

To her, this is steak tartare without the onions, capers and pepper etc.

In her rush to swallow the mincemeat, she uses her tongue to consolidate the soft meat and then swallow it in a large lump. I have never seen a magpie's tongue before, but one of my shots today caught her mouth open, tongue sticking out, catching the mince in mid air.

Bigger mouth.

We now throw the mince in two directions to satisfy each bird. When a maggie is not there, Elvis the friendly kookaburra will take mince from our fingers. But not when he is under pressure from other birds.

Today, a wattle bird was also hanging around in the bushes, waiting for any small left-overs.
