Special Picture: Tomatoes

It was a brave decision to try and grow tomatoes more or less on the road. So sure were the team of their new process that they decided to grow these in a place (in the worst soil on the farm) where everyone who visited the farm had to see them, in their face as you might say.
For five years now we have failed to grow good tomatoes, but only because we refuse to use chemical pesticides. Everyone else uses the most noxious chemicals imaginable and even the poorest farmers will know the names of a list of these potential killers.
(the pests love their tomatoes, just like the Malawians themselves!!).
We use a plant, Tephrosia as a fertilizer and a pesticide, so Chrissie decided to combine the two and try a mulch of the leaves to suppress the weeds, retain moisture and keep the pests away, while growing cauliflower and it worked, so they took the leap to tomatoes.
This crop is so exciting, so they spray a tephrosia mix on the plants as well.
(Chrissie is ill at the moment, so I hope she will be hearing all about the crop.)
