Let's Go Surfin....

When you look at the map, München isn't the first place you think of when you think of surfing.

But.

This is München and everything is possible. The rivers and streams that run through München are fantastic - and water is a huge attraction for me.

As we were in the Englischer Garten on the Saurday, I saw a bloke riding a bike and carrying a surfboard. Did a bit of a double take and wrote it off as a bit of nonsense.

However, after talking to a few people I discovered that they have engineered the Eisbach (the "Ice Stream") so that it has a standing wave and you can surf it.

And people do.

As you can see.

This bloke was about the same height as me (so 6' 3" or 188cm) and when he lost his balance, it was amazing to see how far the stream took him before he was back in control (about 40m or in imperial, quite a ways).
