Oxmarket, Chichester

We often pop into the Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester for its free exhibitions of paintings, ceramics, jewellery etc. Always interesting, it’s all housed in the old Grade II Church of St Andrews, deconsecrated after it was bombed during WW2. It wasn’t until 1971 that work began in restoring the building for its present use.

There are some beautiful etched windows by Majella Taylor, all in keeping with an updated former sacred building. This one shows St Michael, patron saint of artists being one of his attributes. He is often depicted slaying Satan represented by a dragon, which can be seen at the bottom of the windows.

Oxmarket is just off East Street, by Marks and Spencer, well worth a visit at any time of year.
