At home: Winter windfalls....

Its an unusual sight to be still collecting windfalls this late in the season. Its a lovely treat for everyone, not just humans. Our freezer is filled with stewed apple, cinnamon and nutmeg crumbles and frozen bricks of apple sauce. We already have eaten too many Eves Puddings.

The apple tree stands in the middle of the chicken pen. The chickens have enjoyed nothing more, than the children knocking apples down and splicing them with a spade. see HERE.

Jack our little cob, has also a passion for these apples. They are cookers, and I have to restrict his access to them. We laid out the last of the windfalls on a bag to dry out. Jack watched with insatiable interest over the fence. He kicks the fence, pawing it. A horses visual way of pleading for just one....please.

We head in, with an armful of the best ones to roast in the oven. Jack's frothing at the mouth, the apple it seems is sour for compared to his sweet expectation. x
