Iceskating

We went to the winter wonderland today. I expected it to be over commercialised rubbish however I actually enjoyed it thanks to a very enthusiastic 5 year old.
We went skating and he managed it around 3 times with help, ok it was a lot of help but for him it was amazing. You see my 5 year old has a genetic condition and that condition gave him a 2/3 chance of getting other issues and on our roll of the dice it turned out to be dyspraxia. It could have been worse, A lot worse.
In practical terms it means he has very bad core muscles, zero spacial awareness and is really clumsy so putting him on ice was always going to be interesting! They had a load of penguin things to help kids and one of those would have been brilliant but unfortunately they got given out quickly to lots of people who really didn't seem to need them and only had them for the cute factor (honestly half the kids were skating fine whereas mine was like Bambi) - the families who had more than one and who sat with it on the side not using it but refused to give it up "just in case" were the ones I wanted to kill!
As it was we finished early because he had enough of mummy holding him up; he is an independent little soul. He did have fun though and came out with a sense of accomplishment - if he could have had a few minutes of independence it would have had him talking about it all week. Mummy finished with a sense of pride in her biggest munchkin, exhaustion from the work out of holding him up and a wet bum from where his balance was so bad he had us both on the floor.
