Rule of Thirds

With a 9-box grid in mind, the ‘rule of thirds’ identifies the important parts of the landscape that you should consider placing points of interest in.

Studies have shown that a viewer will interact with the image more naturally if you place points of interest in the intersections along the 3 horizontal rows, and 3 vertical columns of the frame. Optimal composition occurs if a dog suddenly runs into frame, stage left. To apply the rule of thirds, in this challenging situation, just show one-third of the dog.
