Fishing houses of Nether Buckie

Traditional fishing houses in the middle next to the shore and up on the cliff with more modern houses in the foreground.

Best seen in LARGE

The houses in the middle are called The Yardie and are now protected by a seawall but originally the fishing boats would have been pulled up between the houses. The Houses on the hill (The Seaton) would have been built by the fishermen of Buckpool Harbour creeping into the left of the shot built in 1857-9. The houses in the foreground are built along Main Street - however it is no longer the main street as once the Newtown was built (beyond The Seaton) along with the larger Cluny Harbour in 1877. This also linked up with the other small fishing communities at Ianston & Portessie to make the modern town of Buckie.

Robbie Burns is assumed by some to have written down a song about Buckie but wrote it as Bucky:

1787
Type: Lady Onlie, Honest Lucky
Tune: The Ruffian's Rant.

A' The lads o' Thorniebank,
When they gae to the shore o' Bucky,
They'll step in an' tak a pint
Wi' Lady Onlie, honest Lucky.

Chorus.-Lady Onlie, honest Lucky,
Brews gude ale at shore o' Bucky;
I wish her sale for her gude ale,
The best on a' the shore o' Bucky.

Her house sae bien, her curch sae clean
I wat she is a daintie chuckie;
And cheery blinks the ingle-gleed
O' Lady Onlie, honest Lucky!
Lady Onlie, &c.
