Chattri

The Chattri, on the South Downs, is an extraordinary war memorial. The Brighton Pavilion was used as a hospital for Indian soldiers during the first world war and the Chattri marks the spot where the 53 Hindus and Sikhs who died in the hospital were cremated - their names are listed on a memorial nearby. Their ashes were scattered in the English Channel.

The Chattri was built as a memorial to all the Indian soldiers who died fighting in the First World War, and every June there is a memorial service at the site.

It's now a pleasant walk up from the main road across fields with spectacular views back over Brighton - much enlarged from when the monument was built - and across the Downs. On a radiant winter's afternoon it was a place of strolling families and dogs chasing sticks.
