Motte

This mound is the main surviving part of the castle built in Oxford in the 1070s. At that stage it was crowned by a timber tower. Two-hundred years later the mound was raised and a ten-sided stone tower was built to overlook the city. Now that the rest of the castle-cum-prison has been converted into a museum and a hotel, the mound is topped mainly by tourists.

No rain here or upstream today and it looks like the floodwater is down an inch or two. But more rain is forecast for tonight...
