Puffin Hunter

Backblipping Our Voyage of the Vikings Adventure...Day 26

Heimaey which literally means Home Island, is an Icelandic island. It is located about 4 nautical miles off the south coast of Iceland. It is the only populated island of the Vestmannaeyjar islands and has a population of 4,500 humans and 8 million puffins each summer. Most of the island's inhabitants make their living from fishing. They are allowed to catch a few puffins to share at festivals or to eat at home.

We were 'pre-warned' by the naturalists on board...not to be shocked if we saw Puffin Dishes on the menu in local eating establishments. This photo shows a multi-media wall mural depicting the chosen method for catching Puffins. We saw Lots of Puffins and didn't venture into any local restaurants.
